  • LOINC Ontology makes it easier for implementers of both SNOMED CT and LOINC

LOINC Ontology makes it easier for implementers of both SNOMED CT and LOINC Back 1 Apr 2025 Back By Kelly Kuru, Chief Communications & Collaborations Officer, SNOMED International. In a recent podcast , I spoke to Marjorie Rallins, Executive Director, Health Data Standards at LOINC (logical observations, identifiers, names and codes). We discussed our ongoing collaboration between the two organizations and the recent release of the LOINC Ontology , focusing on what it includes, how it supports implementers, and how it will be updated and maintained. It’s an exciting development that both organizations have been working hard at and we know will really help both of our stakeholder communities – and, ultimately, patients and care providers. LOINC, as Marjorie explains in the podcast, is an international standard for representing clinical observations and measurements. It initially emerged in 1994 as the project of a researcher at the Regenstrief Institute who identified the need for a standard to share clinical documents electronically. It is published in February and August each year. SNOMED CT , a robust clinical terminology with more than 350,000 concepts, is also a health data standard used in more than 80 countries worldwide. So what is the LOINC Ontology ? An extension of SNOMED CT’s ontological framework that creates SNOMED CT and LOINC codes for all concepts shared between the terminologies, the Ontology grew out of a collaboration both organizations signed in 2022 to work together for the good of all our users. In late 2024, we released a technical preview of the Ontology with the goal of seeking feedback from our user communities as we continued to build it out. Essentially, LOINC content is represented in the Ontology using SNOMED CT's concept model. We – a team of about 10-12 people – co-developed it because both organizations have long understood that providing a single solution makes it much easier for those who implement different combinations of the two standards in health information systems. I should add that the relationship between the two organizations goes back at least two decades at this point, if not longer, so we had a really strong foundation to build upon. Marjorie, calling the endeavour a “labour of love,” says she sees the two organizations and their respective stakeholder communities as overlapping on a Venn diagram. Our (SNOMED International’s) contribution is the SNOMED CT computable framework; LOINC provides laboratory and pathology content in an understood format to countries that do not currently use LOINC. Both our organizations are highly engaged with our members, who guide us and help us understand what they need. “After about 10 years, we said, ‘Let's figure this out,’ says Marjorie. “And we did.” The Ontology is also well-aligned with the interoperability-related work happening in the European Health Data Space , which is currently establishing a common framework for the use and exchange of electronic health data across the European Union. What’s inside The March 25 Ontology production release features more than 35,000 concepts, including quantitative lab tests and the top 200 most used lab tests ordered. This initial release includes concepts that represent at least 80% of test volume; it focuses on the most frequently used terms as defined by LOINC’s Top 20,000 rankings . In the future, you can expect to see the incremental addition of the domains of information (lab, clinical, documents, radiology, survey instruments). Eventually, the plan is to have all of the content that should be integrated into the extension represented for use as well. It might take us a while to get there, but we’re committed to moving in that direction! To accompany and support the Ontology, both organizations have collaborated on producing the Implementation Guide for the LOINC Ontology which provides detailed instructions and strategies for leveraging the extension, with the goal of enhancing interoperability and facilitating global health data exchange. The guide covers the creation of SNOMED CT concepts for LOINC terms, reducing duplication and fostering collaborative efforts, and helps users understand how to implement both LOINC and SNOMED CT standards, enabling them to meet clinical and regulatory requirements efficiently. It also offers a number of clinical use cases and their corresponding benefits. Those use cases include ordering lab tests; standardizing lab test results from SNOMED CT to LOINC; cross-terminology navigation, querying and retrieval of laboratory data; standardized reporting of laboratory procedures and observations; integration of Clinical Decision Support Systems for laboratory data; facilitation of interoperable health information exchange for laboratory results; follow-ups; financial logic; and efficient searching. We’re really looking forward to getting feedback from users and to understanding how it can or is being used for purposes beyond clinical, such as analytics. Marjorie gave a great example in the podcast of how the Ontology could be used for analytics: Say a LOINC user needs to understand which hospital patients develop a post-operative infection. Before the availability of the Ontology, that user would have to use LOINC for the lab data and, separately, SNOMED CT to identify those patients. Now, with a single solution, their work is much less complicated. If you are interested in learning more, check out our podcast . You can also view the recording of the March 24, 2025 LOINC Ontology webinar on the LOINC Ontology website . Read the official press release here , and download the LOINC Ontology here . We look forward to hearing from you throughout the process and to learning about your individual use cases.

  • GMDN Agency and SNOMED International Announce Strategic Collaboration to Advance Global Medical Device Content and Interoperability

GMDN Agency and SNOMED International Announce Strategic Collaboration to Advance Global Medical Device Content and Interoperability Back 29 Jan 2026 Back UNITED KINGDOM – (January 29, 2026) – SNOMED International and the Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) Agency have announced a new collaboration aimed at strengthening the connection between clinical and regulatory medical device data to support safer, more efficient, and more interoperable health systems worldwide. The collaboration brings together SNOMED International, the steward of SNOMED CT, the world’s leading clinical terminology, and the GMDN Agency, a registered UK charity and non-profit organization responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) - the internationally recognized standard for the naming, classification and categorisation of medical devices in regulatory, supply chain, and post-market environments. Together, the organizations will work to enable a more unified and practical approach to using clinical and regulatory device information across the lifecycle of care. Under the agreement, the organizations will jointly develop and maintain a GMDN–SNOMED CT Extension , replacing the existing SNOMED CT–GMDN linkage table with a more robust, sustainable, and interoperable solution. The Extension is designed to improve medical device content coverage, quality, and usability while supporting harmonized implementation across health systems, regulators, and industry. It will enable implementers to use the two standards together more easily, offering flexibility in coding choices while reducing duplication and complexity. “This collaboration is fundamentally about improving how medical device information flows across care delivery, regulation, and oversight,” said SNOMED International CEO Don Sweete . “By strengthening the relationship between SNOMED CT and GMDN, we are helping bridge long-standing gaps between clinical systems and regulatory processes, enabling data captured at the point of care to better support safety monitoring, reporting, and learning at scale.” The agreement is driven by a shared recognition that health systems increasingly need to bridge the gap between clinical and regulatory medical device data. Stakeholders across care delivery, regulation, and industry require consistent device identification that supports clinical documentation while also enabling regulatory reporting, post-market surveillance, traceability, procurement, and inventory management. The existing separation between clinical terminology and regulatory nomenclature has limited data reuse and interoperability, creating a clear need for a more aligned approach. Deniz Bruce, CEO of the GMDN Agency, said: “This collaboration marks an important step forward in strengthening how medical device information is used across global health systems to support interoperability. By working closely with SNOMED International, we are ensuring that clinical and regulatory communities can rely on a more aligned, high‑quality source of device data. Our shared goal is to make it easier for healthcare providers, regulators, and industry to work from the same, consistent information—supporting better patient safety, improved traceability, and more effective post‑market surveillance worldwide.” The collaboration formalizes joint governance, quality oversight, and communications between the two organizations and includes a shared work plan focused on stakeholder engagement, testing with real-world use cases, and the development of guidance to support consistent implementation across settings. The emphasis of the work is on enabling practical, real-world interoperability rather than introducing additional complexity for users. This initiative also reflects a broader shared commitment to global alignment in health data standards. Both SNOMED International and the GMDN Agency are members of the Joint Initiative Council for Global Health Standardization , where international standards organizations collaborate to reduce fragmentation and advance interoperability across clinical, regulatory, and administrative domains. The collaboration demonstrates how that shared vision can be translated into concrete solutions that support patients, providers, regulators, and industry alike. SNOMED International and the GMDN Agency will continue to engage their respective communities as the collaboration progresses, sharing updates and opportunities for involvement as milestones are reached. To learn more about the collaboration, visit https://www.gmdnagency.org/ About the GMDN Agency The GMDN Agency is a registered UK charity and non-profit organisation responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the GMDN database. • BLOG: Jamaica's First SNOMED CT edition released

BLOG: Jamaica's First SNOMED CT edition released Back 26 Sept 2024 Back By Dr. Taleya Girvan, Clinical Informatics Analyst at the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Jamaica, and Dr Keisha Barwise, Digital Health Standards and Health Informatics Consultant, Ministry of Health & Wellness, Jamaica, SNOMED International Member Forum representatives and members of the National Release Centre for Jamaica. Jamaica first joined SNOMED International in April 2023 after having an Affiliate License for almost a year. The Affiliate License afforded us access to learning resources, and allowed us to experiment with how to use SNOMED CT. During this time, we successfully created a proof of concept Health Information Exchange, using SNOMED CT as the clinical language to normalize data from two health databases and plan for the vocabulary that would be used in the upcoming EHR pilot. In April 2023, after completing the procurement of our national Electronic Health Record (EHR) system pilot, we became a full SNOMED International Member — making us the first Caribbean Member country. Jamaica is represented in SNOMED International by the Information Systems for Health Branch of the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) which serves as the hub of all things SNOMED CT in the Ministry. Since officially becoming a Member, we have established the National Release Centre (NRC) and we are in the process of establishing standards and guidelines for national access and distribution of SNOMED CT (and other terminologies). We have continued to attend SNOMED International Business Meetings and Expos (virtually and in person in Atlanta in 2023), a cadre of our staff have completed the SNOMED CT Foundation course, and some are currently pursuing the Implementation Course. We have also launched sensitization efforts to introduce SNOMED CT to healthcare providers across Jamaica, including at the National Health Research Conference, the Caribbean Connect Conference and MOHW Digital Health Standards Workshop. Being a SNOMED International Member brings a wealth of opportunities, including access to comprehensive training programs, the SNOMED International Implementation Team and innovative tools such as Snap2SNOMED , the RefSet and Translation Service, and Simplex. These tools not only allow us to incorporate local colloquial terms into our EHR, ensuring our health system reflects our unique language and culture, but they have also enabled us to create mappings from SNOMED CT to proprietary Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), such as ROCHE & Senaite LIMS for lab code integration. Additionally, we've partially mapped SNOMED CT to the International Classification of Procedures in Medicine (ICPM), facilitating the seamless integration of surgical procedures into the EHR and other electronic applications developed by the Ministry. So, what exactly is SNOMED CT? SNOMED CT is the “most comprehensive, multilingual clinical healthcare terminology in the world. It is a resource with comprehensive, scientifically validated clinical content. The clinical terminology has unmatched depth, enabling clinicians to record data with consistency and enhanced accuracy. SNOMED CT supports the development of comprehensive high-quality clinical content in electronic health records, and provides a standardized way to represent clinical phrases captured by the clinician and enables automatic interpretation of these.” SNOMED CT creates a common language for clinical information, and ensures consistent and standardized data, benefiting patients, healthcare providers, researchers and data scientists. Imagine a patient being admitted to various hospitals and diagnosed with the same disorder, but worded differently – for example, at Hospital A, the patient is diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Prolapse; at Hospital B, the diagnosis is Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc, and at their local Health Centre, the diagnosis is Slipped Disc: three diagnoses that have the same clinical meaning. When data is recorded using these diverse descriptions, data analytics would prove to be challenging. SNOMED CT allows new software to capture data consistently, regardless of the specific user or healthcare setting. This standardized data is then easier to analyze and use within the application. This is just one example of how SNOMED CT can be used to improve healthcare delivery and interoperability in the Jamaican healthcare system. Now, Jamaicans (and Caribbean people overall) – we are known for our vibrant culture – our music, food, fashion, and language. For example, “Hand middle” means the palm of the hand. “Running Belly” refers to “diarrhoea.” If a patient says the doctor “sound me,” it means that they used a stethoscope to listen to their chest. With these unique expressions in mind and an awareness of Jamaicans living across the diaspora, we embarked on a journey to incorporate OUR colloquial language into SNOMED CT – to add synonyms to existing medical concepts, as well as to create new concepts relevant to our healthcare setting. Under the patient and brilliant tutelage of Kai Kewley, Alejandro Lopez Osornio and Anne Randorff Højen from SNOMED International’s Implementation team, we learned how to use the RefSet and Translation tool, as well as the Simplex tool. Every two weeks, we would faithfully meet first thing on a Monday morning (afternoon for our tutors) to learn, brainstorm and troubleshoot. We were only too excited to use these tools! We hit the ground running. We had already curated a list of Jamaican terms used to describe medical concepts with input from doctors across the island, and we mapped them to SNOMED CT. We also created new concepts in Simplex to represent codes from our local laboratory systems that had no SNOMED CT equivalent. We also created concepts for locally relevant medical terms; for example, “ex-marijauna smoker.” After a few minor hiccups which were expertly resolved by the SNOMED International team, we got the exciting news in early July 2024; the first release of the SNOMED CT Jamaican Edition was on the horizon! Also, once successfully released, we could be the first country to release an edition using Simplex. As Jamaicans would say, “glad bag buss,” which means we could hardly contain our excitement. On the morning of July 25, 2024, we heard the words “Congratulations on the release of the first SNOMED CT Jamaican Edition.” A month later, in August 2024, the Jamaican Edition of SNOMED CT was made public in the SNOMED browser. We. Did. It. This is a huge accomplishment for the Jamaican National Release Centre and for the Ministry of Health and Wellness. What’s Next Now that we have the RF2 files for the SNOMED CT Jamaican Edition, it is possible to integrate these into various software programs including our EHR and other data collection platforms to standardize clinical documentation across the country. We will continue to create new medical concepts as needed and relevant to our healthcare setting. We are also excited to share our journey and experiences with SNOMED CT and encourage other countries especially in the Caribbean to consider SNOMED CT in the region’s Digital Health transformation. In the meanwhile, the Jamaican NRC will continue to upskill and strengthen our team so we can continue to enhance the healthcare system for Jamaica and by extension, our region. We would like to extend our gratitude to the SNOMED International, especially Suzy Roy, Kai Kewley and Alejandro Lopez Osornio, for their dedication, encouragement, patience, and genius minds. In Jamaica we say “Big up yuhself! Nuff Respec’ ” We are eager to witness the transformative and exciting changes that SNOMED CT will bring to our nation's digital health sector. Look out, world, the Jamaican ladies have taken a seat at the Digital Health table. • Western Cape Government strengthens the future of patient health information exchange

Western Cape Government strengthens the future of patient health information exchange Back 25 Aug 2022 Back The Western Cape Government is the first regional member on the African continent to adopt the use of SNOMED CT, the most comprehensive global clinical terminology. Adoption of SNOMED CT in Western Cape will enable health information exchange between the region’s participating medical institutions, in addition to satisfying requirements of the 2014 National Health Normative Standards Framework. The Western Cape is the third largest populated province in South Africa after Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, with a population of approximately 7 million. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability of the Western Cape Department of Health was a major game changer in the fight against COVID-19. The ICT-related lessons from the last three years will be leveraged to do business differently, including improving access to care beyond the walls of our health facilities, and to address the quadruple burden of disease. In 2019, an electronic health record (EHR) roadmap developed in the Western Cape Province determined terminological mapping services as a priority element of an interoperable EHR. In 2020, Western Cape Government: Health and Wellness successfully procured mapping services to improve the user experience of front-line clinical staff when they electronically capture patient clinical data. To make full use of procured terminological services and ensure an interoperable future, in July 2022, the Western Cape Government entered into the first regional membership agreement for the use of SNOMED CT on the African continent. This regional membership with SNOMED International extends SNOMED CT to all Western Cape health facilities, public and private, while at the same time benefiting from the ongoing maintenance and evolution of SNOMED CT. Specifically, planned use of SNOMED CT includes use within the Clinical Interface Terminology Service accessible through the patient administration and clinical system across the public health hospitals in Western Cape, as well as use within primary care health facilities and the private sector as it relates to the provisioning of healthcare services. SNOMED CT is the world’s most comprehensive health terminology. Founded in 2007 by nine charter nations, SNOMED International is a not-for-profit, member-owned and driven international organization that has grown to serve 43 Member countries. A resource with comprehensive, scientifically validated clinical content, SNOMED CT enables the consistent representation of clinical content in EHRs. SNOMED CT is mapped to many other international standards and enables clinicians to record data with enhanced accuracy and consistency, supported by an active and engaged community of practice. According to Dr Krish Vallabhjee, Chief Director of the Western Cape Government: Health and Wellness department’s Strategic Cluster, “The Department is making steady progress towards building an electronic health record through multiple inter-operable systems. Our membership of SNOMED and access to its clinical terminology service is a major step up on this journey, that will enable, improve, and simplify the uptake and accuracy of our clinical patient records and more specifically coding patient encounters. • SNOMED International and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formalize collaboration agreement

SNOMED International and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formalize collaboration agreement Back 29 Jul 2021 Back LONDON and CHICAGO, Jul. 29, 2021 -- SNOMED International is pleased to announce a new collaboration agreement with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to include the Academy’s Nutrition Care Process Terminology ( NCPT ) version 2020 in the International Edition of SNOMED CT. The NCPT supports the Academy’s Nutrition Care Process, which is a systematic approach to providing high-quality nutrition care that includes nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention and monitoring/evaluation. The Academy’s Nutrition Care Process Research Outcomes Committee developed and maintains the NCPT. The agreement formalizes the work SNOMED and the Academy have been doing since 2017 when representatives from the Academy and other nutrition and dietetics associations around the world requested the inclusion of the NCPT in the SNOMED CT International Edition. SNOMED and the Academy established the NCPT Clinical Project Group , a SNOMED International project group which includes representatives from both organizations along with international users to guide and facilitate the work. SNOMED International is the nonprofit organization that owns and maintains SNOMED CT , the world’s most comprehensive clinical terminology with more than 350,000 concepts ranging across diagnosis, signs and symptoms and tens of thousands of surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. “We are extremely pleased to be able to formalize this collaborative effort,” said SNOMED International CEO Don Sweete. “The inclusion of the NCPT in SNOMED CT further enhances the utility of the clinical terminology and aligns with our focus on social determinants of health; nutrition playing a key component of an individual's well-being.” “This collaboration comes at an exciting time for health professionals around the world who provide food and nutrition services and care,” said registered dietitian nutritionist Kevin L. Sauer, the 2021-2022 President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “The NCPT is a necessary building block as we solve challenges like malnutrition in all its forms and food insecurity, now and in the future. The Academy has worked with dedicated subject matter experts to author and provide a well-defined nutrition terminology, and the integration of NCPT into SNOMED CT is a major breakthrough toward reaching these objectives.” The five-year agreement governs the working relationship between the Academy and SNOMED International regarding the maintenance and updating of NCPT content in SNOMED CT. Related activities will also include developing an approach to the method and content of attribution, developing and maintaining processes based on changes to SNOMED CT over time, and to managing additions and changes to the NCPT. Both organizations will work together to build awareness of the benefits of this initiative among dietetic and nutrition professionals and will consider future collaborative activities based on emerging global requirements. About the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Representing more than 112,000 credentialed nutrition and dietetics practitioners, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.
