2021 Annual Report highlights importance of collaboration in achieving the strategic goals of SNOMED International Back 9 May 2022 Back SNOMED International is pleased to announce the release of the organization’s 2021 Annual Report . Titled A collaborative approach to deliver global interoperability , it reflects our efforts and achievements as we continue to work toward realizing our 2020-2025 Strategy. And while the report focuses on the breadth of SNOMED International’s 2021 activities, it also highlights the growing quantity and quality of our many collaborations and their contribution to SNOMED CT. In addition to shining a spotlight on our strong global alliances, the 2021 Annual Report continues the narrative of the SNOMED CT Value Proposition, with the 2021 release of an interactive report on the Case for Investment in the clinical terminology. Detailing how SNOMED CT adds measurable value to a broad range of primary and secondary health processes, the Report showcases how leveraging SNOMED CT encoded data supports the realization of improved patient outcomes. The 2021 Annual Report also outlines the steps taken toward more broadly and actively encouraging our community to participate in developing SNOMED CT. This includes the introduction of community content, a way of “democratizing terminology” by enabling stakeholders to contribute to, and participate in, the ongoing development, maintenance and improvement of SNOMED CT. A changed SNOMED CT delivery model, enabling Members and other users access to the most recent version of SNOMED CT on a monthly basis, a change from the previous twice annual schedule, is another notable milestone. Further, in the area of innovation, the 2021 Annual Report demonstrates how enhancements to SNOMED CT and its supporting tools and resources continue to strengthen advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to the benefit of our stakeholders. We are proud of all these very concrete achievements and are grateful to the contributions of our ever-expanding global community of practice in advancing the usefulness and pervasiveness of SNOMED CT. Imagine hospital notes transforming themselves into research-grade evidence before the night shift ends: built in Oxford, Striata, a SNOMED-powered AI Scientist ingests raw text, de-identifies it, and maps every concept to SNOMED CT (and companion vocabularies) in real time. Once structured, its multi-agent engine sweeps across diagnoses, medications, age, comorbidities, seasonal trends and workflow metrics, plotting hidden patterns, proposing testable hypotheses, running statistics and flagging bias, then hands users publication-ready reports. Early pilots, including Latvia's NHS, show Striata compresses weeks of analyst labour into minutes, turning any ward into a discovery hub without adding to workloads. By fusing large language model reasoning with SNOMED's formal logic it delivers faster scientific discovery, rapid pharmacovigilance, sharper equity audits and instant operational feedback. With a population of nearly 4 million, Croatia is the latest European country to join SNOMED International since the March 2022 announcement that the European Union (EU) will provide its Member States with 60 per cent funding towards SNOMED International membership until 2027, via the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA). “Highly developed with a fully integrated, globalized economy, Croatia made eHealth a priority in its 2021-2027 national health development plan , which is consistent with our comprehensive healthcare reform," says Croatian health Minister Vili Beroš on the occasion of Croatia joining SNOMED International. The goals of the strategy include 36 measures in five categories: improved healthy lifestyles and more effective disease prevention; improvement of the health system; improvement of the model of care for key health challenges; making the health system a desirable place to work; and improving the financial sustainability of the health system. SNOMED CT , the world’s most comprehensive health terminology, is developed, maintained and distributed by SNOMED International, a not-for-profit, member-owned and driven international organization founded in 2007 by nine charter nations. The clinical terminology will play an important role in supporting Croatia in achieving its eHealth goals, particularly those pertaining to improving the healthcare system by supporting greater interoperability and by enabling secondary uses of clinical data such as research and data analysis, providing more insights into patients and care delivery. Moving beyond national borders and connecting to the emerging European Health Data Space , SNOMED CT is poised and positioned to strengthen the secure exchange and interoperability of health data across Europe. “It is encouraging to see the positive impact of the European funding commitment for SNOMED International membership as it contributes to the connectedness of the European digital health landscape,” says SNOMED International CEO Don Sweete. “Joining an active coalition of SNOMED CT adopters, Croatia’s membership recognizes the benefits clinical terminology can produce for the nation’s and broader European Union’s citizens and health systems with a commitment to implementing SNOMED.” “Although the Croatian health system has been one of the leaders among the EU countries in the cross-border exchange of health data, more precisely e-prescriptions and patient summaries, the use of SNOMED CT at the national level will lower barriers for Croatia to join any subsequent EU level initiatives aiming at cross-border exchange and reuse of health data,” says Croatian Minister Beroš. “Recognition of the reform progress of the Croatian health system by the EU and global experts once again confirms that this Government and the health administration are on the right path towards improving the health picture of the nation. All of the above underlines our reform slogan ‘Health comes first’, which most vividly expresses what we are striving for”, concludes Minister Beroš.
