The Norwegian Public Dental Service has taken the previous work with Snomed CT one step further. Aiming at national standardization based on international standards, FHIR-profiles are created for all core dental information using Snomed CT as terminology. The pilot implementation shows end-to-end exchange from a proprietary EHR-structure to an open standards FHIR-storage, and view of data in a simulator-application and use for analytics. All using Snomed CT postcoordinations. The work will be the basis for establishing a national EHR where storage is built entirely on standards.

Description

The scope of the project is implementation. The pilot is the basis of further work leading towards a national EHR.

Scope

SNOMED CT was chosen for its content. SNOMED CT is the only terminology know to support the information needs in dentistry. In addition the formal definitions, relationships and the ability to describe clinical events using postcoordination is highly useful.

How SNOMED CT will be used

SNOMED CT is used as the main terminology for clinical information. Both pre- and postcoordinations are used as code-values inside FHIR. SNOMED CT is used as a terminology integrator for the proprietary codes in the existing EHR, and natively in the simulator. Eventually SNOMED CT will be a requirement in the projects procurement of a modular solution.
