Since 2015, hospitals in the Netherlands have implemented interface terminologies, starting with the Diagnosis Thesaurus, and since 2018, the Procedures Thesaurus. Both thesauri are mapped to SNOMED CT. Consequently, hospitals have been utilizing SNOMED CT data for some time.
Description
All hospitals in the Netherlands, some quality registries and data collections
Scope
In the Netherlands, SNOMED is the preferred, and soon to be mandated, clinical terminology. Due to its comprehensive nature, SNOMED is particularly suitable for use in hospital settings. In our thesauri, we will demonstrate how SNOMED is utilized alongside ICD-10, LOINC, Orphanet codes, and billing codes.
How SNOMED CT will be used
In collaboration with professional organizations and the SNOMED NRC at Nictiz, the Dutch Hospital Data organization mapped Diagnoses and Procedures used by hospitals to SNOMED concepts. EHR vendors implemented the thesauri, and by Q1 2025, nearly all hospitals use the diagnosis thesaurus, while 19% of hospitals use the procedures thesaurus.
