In Region Stockholm and Region Gotland, we have a project for the implementation of a new medical record system for maternity care and childbirth. The system is currently being configured and the work is being done by clinical staff in collaboration with the vendor. Informaticians also participate and play an important role in the project where the informaticians provide the terminological and SNOMED CT expertise. In accordance with the decision and strategy, we have adopted SNOMED CT as our common terminology. We have utilized SNOMED CT in both the implementation and configuration phases. Some functions in the system are already based on SNOMED bindings, while for other parts it is possible to use SNOMED, but not required. According to the regional strategy for SNOMED CT we also prepared for the future use of SNOMED CT. We want to share the challenges we have encountered, the solutions we have developed, but also the realization that the content in SNOMED CT within this specific area is underdeveloped.
Description
The scope of the implementation represents a first step in the introduction of SNOMED CT in Region Stockholm, in line with the decision that SNOMED CT should be used. There is a recognized need within the region to adopt a unified terminology, and for that purpose, we have chosen to use SNOMED CT.
Scope
To fullfill the decision and strategy for SNOMED CT use in Region Stockholm. For this type of work we don´t see that we have any other alternative besides invent a local code system or terminology.
How SNOMED CT will be used
Some functions in the system are already based on SNOMED bindings, while for other parts it is possible to use SNOMED, but not required. An example for a requirement of SNOMED CT bindings in the system is for certain integrations. We also prepared for the future use of SNOMED CT in accordance with the regional SNOMED CT strategy by incorporating SNOMED CT terms in the linguistic work and through mapping, which we will be able to benefit from, in the future.
