BreastCheck is Irelands National breast screening service. BreastCheck were implementing a brand new system to replace their archaic system and chose SNOMED CT as their Clinical Terminology for their new system. BreastCheck completed a thorough review of their dataset and came thorough the DSMP in the HSE to align their data with National and International standards to ensure a safe and comprehensive dataset in the new purpose built system for BreastCheck. When it comes to screening it is vital interpretation is very clear and evident and this is where the team ensured SNOMED CT had the most upto date standards for their screening system.

Description

The project came to the DSMP with a dataset that was perhaps poorly defined in the previous system hence giving the project owner an opportunity to have clarity in all aspects of Breast Screening. The old system had no defined rules regarding many different aspects of the screening process. For example:

Because the Tissue Sampling Procedure(s) is ill defined, we cannot implement rules regarding what lab data to expect. Since the system can only understand that some tissue sampling occurred‚ it can only expect some lab data.

There was no key feature in separating Breast Cancer diagnosis and Non Breast Cancer . But now after developing the reference set and having clearer definitions rules can be implemented regarding aspects of the lab ordering. Making the process a much more safe and user friendly system .

Scope

SNOMED CT was selected due to its granular in depth coding system and its internationally recognised status.
