Our partners SNOMED International has an active program of partnering with international standards development organizations, professional clinical bodies and commercial organizations. The goal is to facilitate the use of SNOMED CT with other international standards and profiles. The SNOMED CT Included badge represents content fully integrated as part of SNOMED CT. While partners retain ownership of their content, SNOMED International manages, produces, releases and distributes it as part of SNOMED CT. The focus of partnerships is to enhance consistency in meaningful data capture and information exchange and to improve safety, while enhancing functionality and enabling interoperability for the growing number of healthcare professions that use and exchange electronic health records using SNOMED CT and related products. Some of the resulting products include mappings, SNOMED CT subsets and guidance on the use of SNOMED CT alongside, and integrated with, other standards. To ensure periodontal content within SNOMED CT is in line with current practice, the Dentistry CRG advised incorporation of content from the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions, jointly published by the AAP and the EFP. It brings together over 400 leading institutions working in healthcare, research, disease advocacy, life science, and information technology. The partners in the Global Alliance are working together to create a common framework of harmonized approaches to enable the responsible, voluntary, and secure sharing of genomic and clinical data. The work of the Global Alliance is critical to realizing the potential of recent technological advances that make possible the large-scale collection of data on genome sequencing and clinical outcomes. To seize this extraordinary opportunity, it is often necessary to ask questions that span individual datasets. The Global Alliance is working to alter the current reality where data are kept and studied in silos, and tools and methods are non-standardized and incompatible. This Cooperation Agreement was updated to a Collaboration Agreement in April 2016 focusing on agreed joint work, including: Development of a SNOMED CT General Dentistry Diagnoses Subset Release and maintenance of this SNOMED CT General Dentistry Diagnoses Subset Ongoing provision of Subject Matter Experts by ADA Support for maintenance and updating of the linkage between SNOMED CT and SNODENT at respective releases The SNOMED CT General Dentistry Diagnoses Refset is now released and updated annually in line with the July release of SNOMED CT. It is worth noting that the Dentistry Clinical Reference Group has also produced an Odontogram refset which is also available through SNOMED International and aligns with SNODENT where appropriate. Although about two-thirds of people with epilepsy could be seizure free with medication treatment, gaps in diagnosis and treatment mean that millions of people continue to have seizures, which affect their health, relationships, education, and employment opportunities. The agreement will be reviewed and evaluated to explore how the two organizations may continue to collaborate in 2023. This was the first agreement between the two organizations, clarifying the use of SNOMED CT in DICOM standards and how the SNOMED CT content should be managed over time. The SNOMED CT Licensing Agreement is for 5 years. In 2021, SNOMED International and DICOM formally extended their longstanding agreement to publish a SNOMED CT Freeset of coded concepts in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Standard. Learn more LOINC® In 2013, IHTSDO and Regenstrief Institute Inc. signed a long-term agreement to begin cooperative work linking their leading global health care terminologies: Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes, or LOINC®, and SNOMED CT. In October 2022, the two organizations signed a new collaboration agreement facilitating the adoption of standardized terminology to support broadened interoperability of health data exchange around the globe with the goal of enhancing and improving the delivery of healthcare. The agreement also paved the way forward for coordinated use of SNOMED CT and LOINC® by both SNOMED International and Regenstrief, with each retaining editorial control of its respective standard. In October 2023, and under the scope of the 2022 agreement, LOINC® from Regenstrief and SNOMED International commenced generation of The LOINC Ontology: A LOINC and SNOMED CT interoperability solution . Learn more HL7 International In July 2019, Health Level Seven® Inc. and SNOMED International announced another 2 year collaboration agreement, building on previous agreements in 2009, 2014 and 2016. The agreement again is aimed at improving interoperability, thus focusing on the adoption of working practices that facilitate the use of SNOMED CT with HL7 standards globally. As previously, both organisations are working towards avoiding duplication of effort and resolving issues related to gaps and overlaps. The agreement recently renewed in 2021, target activities have been planned up to July 2023, at which point a review of delivered work products and upcoming activities will be undertaken. Learn more International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use In 2021, SNOMED International and the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) announced the release of important new maps between global medical terminologies SNOMED CT and MedDRA. This collaborative effort was the first deliverable of a new agreement entered into between SNOMED International and ICH. Learn more Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency In 2012, SNOMED International and Global Medical Device Nomenclature Agency (GMDNA), the organization responsible for the international Global Medical Device Nomenclature© (GMDN), signed a 5 year Cooperation Agreement. A key focus of the Agreement was to exchange, harmonize and incorporate medical device term descriptions from each other to enhance the end-to-end patient risk and safety use cases in healthcare systems incorporating medical device information. Education partnerships Learn more Hospital Italiano In 2019, SNOMED International signed an agreement with Sociedad Italiana de Beneficencia en Buenos Aires, commonly referred to as Hospital Italiano, to deliver SNOMED CT education on its behalf in Spanish within select Latin America countries. Learn more Certified Health Informatician Australasia SNOMED International together with the Certified Health Informatician Australasia (CHIA) program have announced that three SNOMED CT courses are now endorsed for continuing professional development (CPD) points and count towards CHIA recertification. Learn more Digital China Health In 2019, Digital China Health and SNOMED International struck an agreement to deliver mutually agreed upon SNOMED CT educational content including the organization’s clinically and technically curated Foundation and Implementation courses, with the potential to also offer the organizations suite of Authoring courses for delivery. As part of this agreement, Digital China Health will serve as an extension of the SNOMED International Education Program within China and be empowered to issue course completion certificates and certifications as applicable. Research partnerships Learn more Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics In June 2022, the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) community and SNOMED International formalized their long-time relationship with a five-year collaborative agreement that will benefit both of their user communities. The collaboration provides OHDSI and its user community with comprehensive ontologies on specific healthcare domains and content such as devices, social determinants of health, disease severity scores and modifiers of cancers, as well as better concept definitions and resolutions of composite concepts in large-scale observational research. Back Shelley Lipon Chief Operating Officer Shelley leads the Customer and Stakeholder Relations and Education and Product Support teams and joined SNOMED International in October of 2014 after spending the last 10 years with Canada Health Infoway (“Infoway”). During her time at Infoway she was responsible for all client relations and investment projects for the mid-western region, also leading Infoway's Certification Service for 3 years. Prior to working for Infoway Shelley was the CEO of the Saskatchewan Health Information Network, the provincial agency responsible for the development and implementation of the electronic health record across the Province. Shelley is a fellow Chartered Accountant and also holds a certified corporate director accreditation. - Jim Case
Back Jim Case Chief Terminologist Jim joined SNOMED International in June 2015, seconded on a part time basis from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), providing leadership across the Content Development and Mapping areas. After retiring from the NLM in December 2018, Jim transitioned wholly to SNOMED International, retaining his half-time role as the Head of Terminology. Jim received his MS in Genetics from Stanford University and both his D.V.M. and Ph.D. (Comparative Pathology) from UC Davis. He served as Professor of Clinical Diagnostic Informatics with the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System at UC Davis from 1986 until 2010. In 1995, his efforts were focused on the development of national veterinary data standards. Having been heavily involved in standards development organizations, Jim has served as a member of the Laboratory LOINC committee, co-chair of the Health Level Seven vocabulary work group, Director at large for HL7 and is currently a member of the WHO Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee for ICD-11. He was Professor of Clinical Diagnostic Informatics at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, from 1987-2010. He served at the NLM from January 2010 to December 2018, where his primary role was the development and maintenance of the US extension to SNOMED CT and addition of US content into the International release of SNOMED CT. He is the first veterinarian to be elected to the American College of Medical Informatics. Back Don Sweete Chief Executive Officer Don Sweete is Chief Executive Officer of SNOMED International. He joined SNOMED International in 2014, bringing more than 30 years of industry leadership and executive management experience to his role. As CEO, Don leads the corporate direction and strategy of SNOMED International, and is responsible for all facets of the business ranging from product content, technical support, customer relationship management, and organization enabling functions. Since joining the organization, Sweete has worked to share SNOMED International’s broadening strategy and vision with its Members, customers, and partners globally. Prior to becoming CEO, Don Sweete served as a member of SNOMED International’s Management Board (formerly known as IHTSDO), from October 2011 to December 2013. During this time he held positions on various Management Board Committees (Executive, Finance, Transition, Implementation and Innovation) contributing to the success of the organization. In his previous role as Executive Regional Director of the Standards Collaborative and Atlantic Region for Canada Health Infoway, he was responsible for all digital health implementations in the region and fulfilling the national standards agenda. A graduate of Canada’s Dalhousie University, Don possesses extensive experience in health services and health information technology where he has held executive positions with both commercial (SHL Systemhouse, Siemens, Cerner) and governmental (Assistant Deputy Minister of Corporate Services Ministry of Health Nova Scotia) organizations over the course of the past 3 decades. - Rory Davidson
Back Rory Davidson Chief Digital Information Officer Rory joined SNOMED International in January 2013 with a background in technology, having worked in a wide range of countries, industries, technologies and roles. As Chief Digital Information Officer, Rory is responsible for the effective integration of SNOMED International’s content development and technology teams, to ensure that the delivery of SNOMED CT and relevant technology services continue to meet the high standard and expected outcomes of the organization’s members, the wider community and internal stakeholders. Previously, Rory led the SNOMED International Technology Services group ensuring that the technology platform was put in place to secure the quality, maintenance and delivery of SNOMED CT as well as the day to day operations of SNOMED International. Before joining the organization, Rory worked as part of the end to end solutions architecture team responsible for the roll-out of smart energy meters in the UK, and prior to that he worked for the Department of Health in the UK as the Lead Technical Architect for the National Pandemic Flu Service and the Lead Technical Architect for Primary Care within NHS Connecting for Health. Rory has also held the role of Head of User Solutions at Atos KPMG Consulting, covering the design and implementation of user experience practices across multiple technologies and industries. Back Kelly Kuru Chief Communications & Collaborations Officer Kelly joined SNOMED International in February 2017 with over 10 years experience in the health and health informatics industry. In this position, Kelly is responsible for leading SNOMED International’s internal and external communications presence internationally, including global media relations and Member country and employee communications. Prior to joining SNOMED International, Kelly was positioned at Canada Health Infoway and was responsible for digital health strategy development, vendor liaison, as well as driving strategic communications and stakeholder engagement in pursuit of the organization’s clinical interoperability and standards program. A graduate of the Universities of Western Ontario and Victoria, Kelly thrives on communicating and engaging with staff, stakeholders and influencers to successfully support achievement of organizational vision and strategic priorities.
