Description

The Information Management Systems (IMS) specific for biobanks offers to do an efficient management of donors and donations, to manage associated information (clinical, epidemiological, pathological, etc. or as specific project), and to control on the sample processing with the Implementation of both the MIABIS definitions as well as SPREC and BRISQ standards.

Scope

To develop mechanisms using terminological resources to support the ease of interrogation of Biobank data to identify cohorts of patients.

  • Point 1. Analysis of the semantic resources available in Spanish Network of Biobank (RNBB). This objective is oriented to know the state of the art of the IMS of the biobanks integrating the RNBB and to analyze the heterogeneity of semantic resources of the each IMS.

  • Point 2. Definition of the strategy to be used for the integration of the identified semantic resources in the context of interoperability. From the technical and semantic interoperability point of view, the choice of strategy is being defined on the bases of UNE-EN ISO 13606 norm based on the construction of archetypes and SNOMED CT as encoding scheme.

  • Point 3. Definition of a subset of SNOMED CT terms associated with the field of biobanks. This way has been already defined through a multidisciplinary approach with the designation of certain subsets of variables defined in an appropriate hierarchy. A guideline of scaling new domains in parallel with the development of biobank activities and knowledge were proposed.

How SNOMED CT will be used

SNOMED CT will be used to classify patient data within the Biobank environment, using concept types such as procedures, Findings, Anatomical concepts and supporting attribute types. The approach uses the Spanish release of SNOMED CT, with a Biobanks extension to support additional terminology requirements.

Why SNOMED CT will be used

Access to the ontological basis of SNOMED CT, along with Spanish translation of concepts, and the national support for SNOMED CT.
