Canadian Partnership Against Cancer

Status:

Implemented

Category:

Synoptic reporting

Description

This initiative aims to further the adoption of standards for synoptic cancer pathology reporting through implementation of electronic tools across Canada. The College of American Pathologists (CAP) cancer protocols were adopted as a national content standard for cancer pathology reporting in July 2009.

Scope

Synoptic reporting for cancer surgery.

How SNOMED CT will be used

The electronic version of the CAP cancer protocols are SNOMED CT encoded where the codes exist. The SNOMED CT codes and other data sets will be collected by provincial cancer registries and used for cancer surveillance purposes at the provincial, national and international level. As part of this initiative, cancer pathology reports will be sent electronically to their respective provincial cancer registries using standardized HL7 messages.

Why SNOMED CT will be used

Currently CAP is both the author and publisher of the cancer protocols, and maps to SNOMED CT where available to enable interoperability.
