Description
Provide pertinent medical information about MedicAlert members to emergency responders and health care professionals.
Scope
Members wear a MedicAlert bracelet or other ID type that features unique identification information, which links to critical patient data such as medical conditions, allergy warnings, special needs, devices or implants, medication lists, physicians' names and emergency contacts.
How SNOMED CT will be used
MedicAlert is mapping SNOMED CT to local codes for medical conditions. Once this is complete, MedicAlert plans to extend the map to include data for allergies, medical devices and implants.
Why SNOMED CT will be used
SNOMED CT is a multilingual international health information standard that supports MedicAlert's goal of providing paramedics across Canada and eventually internationally with electronic access to critical patient information. By using SNOMED CT, the data can be shared and accurately interpreted by the receiving system.
