International Council of Nurses (ICN) and IHTSDO deliver second collaborative product

April 18, 2016

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) are pleased to announce the delivery of an equivalency table for nursing interventions between the ICN’s International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) and SNOMED CT.

The table of equivalents provides a vehicle for transforming ICNP-encoded data to SNOMED CT (e.g., an ICNP concept in a local system can be converted via the table to the equivalent SNOMED CT concept for use in a multidisciplinary record). By providing a clear pathway from ICNP to SNOMED CT, the table of equivalents helps to ensure that users of ICNP can continue to use their preferred terminology while remaining a central part of the bigger picture and wider implementation of SNOMED CT globally. The product will be a useful resource to nurses and healthcare facilities using SNOMED CT for documentation in electronic health records and using ICNP to help identify clinically relevant content in documentation of nursing care. Robust systems and processes within ICN and IHTSDO assure the integrity of both terminologies.
