Licensing

Usage of SNOMED CT requires a license. If you are using and/or deploying SNOMED CT in a non-Member country/territory, please apply for a license through the Member Licensing & Distribution Service (MLDS).  If you are deploying SNOMED CT in a Member country, please register your use with the National Release Center (NRC) of that country (unless your country has MLDS access, when it should instead be used). 

Fees

We does not charge for use of SNOMED CT in SNOMED International Member countries/territories.

Charges may apply in non-Member territories and are calculated based on the territory's (as determined by the World Bank) and use.

For a fee calculation or estimate, please contact info@snomed.org with information about your intended use. Other modes of deployment eg. web applications and browsers, will require special permission and fees applied.

All license holders in non-Member countries/territories are required to submit a Statement of Usage via MLDS on an annual basis. Invoices for fees are issued upon obtaining SNOMED CT and annually thereafter.

Fee Exemptions

Fee exemptions may be applied for SNOMED CT deployments in non-Member territories.

SNOMED International offers three types of fee exemptions for SNOMED CT deployments:

1. Use in countries categorized as low-income (Band E) by the World Bank: Please see our Affiliate License Fee information sheet to insure that the country qualifies.

2. Qualifying research projects: Offered strictly to encourage the use of SNOMED CT in non-commercial research that contributes to broadening our collective understanding and knowledge base. Research projects must not be intended for commercial end use.

To apply for a fee waiver, please write to info@snomed.org and send a formal, signed letter on official letterhead/stationery addressed to the SNOMED International CEO. It should be signed by a representative of the university, research organization or other appropriate body, and contain the following information:

  • Description of the project
  • Names of the project leader and any other stakeholders involved
  • Project end date
  • Expected outcomes

Your application will be reviewed and if successful, a fee waiver agreement will be issued. You will be obliged to report your project progress, findings and any implementations on an annual basis. All users of the product containing SNOMED CT, will be required to obtain a license. Any programs/material encoded with SNOMED CT will be deemed as SNOMED International's property.

3. Humanitarian/Charitable use: Offered strictly to not for profit organizations who would like to use SNOMED CT non-commercially, for the betterment of people living in rural areas and/or poorer countries.

To apply for a fee waiver, please write to info@snomed.org and send a formal, signed letter on official letterhead/stationery addressed to the SNOMED International CEO and containing the following information:

  • The nature and scope of the proposed use of SNOMED CT.
  • The product/service in which SNOMED CT would be used.
  • The time frame for deployment.
  • The results you hope to achieve through this work.
  • Information about how you will monitor and evaluate progress.
  • Information about any fees you will charge to health professionals (or others) for the use of SNOMED CT or the product/service in which it is used.
  • Any other facts that you feel would be relevant for consideration.

Your application will be reviewed by the Management Board, if successful, a public good agreement will be issued. You will be obliged to report your project progress, findings and any implementations on an annual basis. All users of the product containing SNOMED CT, will be required to obtain a license. Any programs/material encoded with SNOMED CT will be deemed as SNOMED International's property.
