The SNOMED CT International Edition to be published on first day of each month BLOG: The SNOMED CT International Edition to be published on first day of each month The SNOMED CT International Edition to be published on first day of each month Back 19 May 2023 Back In January 2022, SNOMED International moved to releasing the International Edition of SNOMED CT at the end of every month , rather than just twice a year. Today, we are announcing the move to a new release day: the first day of each month. In this blog, SNOMED International Release Manager Andrew Atkinson explains why we made the shift, how it reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and evolution throughout the entire lifecycle of a release, and how it benefits our users. Q: What change will users see as of September 2023? AA: The International Edition packages will be released on MLDS on the first of each month, instead of the last day of the month. The final release on the old schedule will be on July 31, 2023, and the first release on the new schedule will be published on September 1, 2023. This means there will be no release in the month of August 2023, as there would be no new content to publish on August 1 after just having deployed the July release on the day before! This will be the only month to go without a release (including August 2024), as after that there will be a new release published indefinitely on the first of each month. Q: Why did SNOMED International and the Community decide to change the release day to the first of the month? AA: There were multiple drivers for this change, from removing the ambiguity of release dates to preventing conflicts with certain types of extension content. However, the predominant reason is to improve the efficiency of the release cycles, in order to provide benefits such as additional time for those stakeholders who base their extension and derivatives on the International Edition releases. Q: What problems will the new release day solve? AA: As mentioned, it removes any confusion as to which date releases will be published (previously they could be on the 28th, 29th, 30th, or 31st). Q: What kind of stakeholder engagement did we conduct to get feedback on this change? AA: We have discussed this proposal at great length with a variety of stakeholders, across multiple conferences. We also published early visibility notifications in the recent April 2023 International Edition announcements and Release Notes, and put a notice in our Early Visibility page - both providing the means for users to share their comments with us: https://confluence.ihtsdotools.org/display/RMT/2023+Early+Visibility+Release+Notifications Q: What impact does this have on national extensions or derivative releases? AA: This should have very little impact on extensions and derivatives, other than a positive one, which is to provide a bit of extra time for translations and migrations that are based on the “January” and “July” releases. That’s because these dependent releases will be brought forward from January 31 and July 31, to January 1 and July 1 respectively (instead of being moved back to February 1/August 1). This will prevent any confusion as to which releases are termed “January”/”July,” and will provide additional time for stakeholders to prepare their extension/derivative content that is dependent upon these releases. Q: What does this mean for the next monthly release? AA: The May 2023 International Edition release will be published as normal on May 31, as will the June and July releases (on June 30 and July 31 respectively). The first release on the first of the month will be published on September 1, 2023, and we will then continue to publish all subsequent releases on the first of each month. Concerns or questions? - SNOMED International and IHE forge inaugural agreement jointly supporting optimal patient care
SNOMED International and IHE forge inaugural agreement jointly supporting optimal patient care Back 5 Apr 2019 Back London, United Kingdom, April 5, 2019 -- Today, IHE International and SNOMED International formally announce a license agreement encouraging data consistency and interoperability across international boundaries, with benefits for clinical care, research and operational efficiency. An organization geared at improving the way computer systems in healthcare share information, IHE’s commitment to working with SNOMED International as the global leader in healthcare terminology promotes the coordinated use of established standards in support of optimal patient care. Through this agreement, the organizations have agreed on the production of a SNOMED CT IHE Set which includes a jointly decided upon set of SNOMED CT concepts and identifiers within IHE profiles. By placing the SNOMED CT codes referenced in IHE profiles under a free international license, the current agreement reduces incentives for national groups to specify variant code sets based on other terminologies. The SNOMED CT value sets specified in IHE profiles are selected to ensure data consistency and interoperability in support of a variety of clinical use cases. IHE profiles are developed in eleven active clinical and operational domains. SNOMED CT value sets referenced in these profiles are typically used to bind coded values to content in structured documents, discrete data elements and metadata. Approximately 30 IHE profiles reference SNOMED CT value sets as of the date of this agreement. Over the course of the 5 year agreement, the SNOMED CT IHE Set will be updated officially annually, taking into account updates to the IHE profiles which are performed annually in each IHE domain. Thirty-seven profiles within 6 domains currently fall within the scope of the agreement. Phast-Services, based in Paris, France, will serve as experts on behalf of IHE to maintain the SNOMED CT IHE Set. ”For 20 years, IHE has pursued collaboration to advance standards-based interoperability in health information technology,” said Michael, McCoy, MD, Co-chair of the IHE International Board. “This agreement with SNOMED International marks a significant milestone toward making standards more accessible and usable.” From SNOMED International, “we are excited and encouraged to embark on this license agreement with IHE International”, said Don Sweete, the organization’s CEO. “Cooperation and accord among the world’s health standards organizations has never been more critical. The like-mindedness of our two organizations in aspiring to enable the clear exchange of information clearly supports the validity of our agreement to work together.” Subscribe to SNOMED International news Stay up to date on SNOMED news, features, developments and newsletters by subscribing to our news service. - SNOMED International and LOINC® announce renewed collaboration agreement and upcoming production release of the LOINC Ontology
SNOMED International and LOINC® announce renewed collaboration agreement and upcoming production release of the LOINC Ontology Back 11 Mar 2025 Back SNOMED International and LOINC® by Regenstrief announce their renewed agreement and upcoming production release of the LOINC ® Ontology: A LOINC and SNOMED CT interoperability solution . Renewed commitment Although the main focus of the renewed collaboration agreement is the release of the LOINC Ontology, it also continues the work initiated in 2022, including the adoption of working practices that facilitate the use and interoperability of the terminology standards both organizations produce. It will also focus on ensuring that stakeholders/users globally have clear direction on the use of the standards, whether together or individually, and that an effective interoperability solution is available to users when both standards are implemented in the same system. The upcoming release is the result of the renewed collaboration between the two organizations that began in 2022 and continued in 2023 with the technical preview of the ontology , building on the relationship formed more than a decade ago. The ontology, colloquially referred to as the LOINC Extension, is slated for release at the end of March 2025 and will initially cover quantitative laboratory tests. After the initial production release, Regenstrief plans to issue the release twice a year (March and September) following the twice annual LOINC release . To keep up to date on important project news including informational release webinars, subscribe to receive updates . What is the LOINC Ontology? The LOINC Ontology supports providers and users who implement different combinations of SNOMED CT and LOINC in health information systems and allows them to meet clinical and regulatory requirements in a single solution. An extension of SNOMED CT’s ontological framework, the ontology creates SNOMED CT and LOINC codes for all concepts that are shared between the terminologies. SNOMED CT provides the computable framework and LOINC provides laboratory and pathology content in an understood format to countries that do not currently use LOINC. The goals of the collaboration are to improve health and better care through standardized terminology and to make it easy for implementers to take a unified approach to implementing both standards. It minimizes duplication of effort between Regenstrief and SNOMED International, gives implementers a choice of which codes to use, and provides a single solution that meets clinical and regulatory requirements globally. As part of this joint effort, SNOMED International subject matter experts have worked with the LOINC team to provide ontological guidance, modelling, relevant content specialization and technical support. Regenstrief, however, continues to own and manage the ontology. The March 2025 release will include more than 35,000 concepts, including quantitative lab tests and the top 200 most used lab tests ordered. Domains of information (lab, clinical, documents, radiology, survey instruments) will be added incrementally. We will link existing SNOMED CT concepts to existing LOINC content where applicable and new LOINC codes will be created as needed. LOINC Parts will be mapped to SNOMED concepts, and new SNOMED CT concepts will be created as needed. Over the next few months, both organizations will also focus on developing implementation resources, including jointly developed guidance, tangible pilots and opportunities for community engagement, to better understand implementers’ experiences. LOINC , short for Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes, is a worldwide standard used in 193 countries and available in 20 languages for identifying health measurements, observations and documents enabling the identification, exchange and collection of data across health systems. Created and maintained at Regenstrief Institute , the system is free to use. SNOMED CT , with more than 360,000 concepts, is the most comprehensive, multilingual clinical healthcare terminology in the world. “It is extremely gratifying to see the progress that the LOINC and SNOMED CT teams have made over the past year in developing the production release of the LOINC Ontology,” says SNOMED International Chief Executive Officer Don Sweete. “While our end goal is, jointly, to support the delivery of better patient care worldwide, a big piece of that is enabling providers and other users of the ontology with a less complex, more integrated approach that eliminates the challenges posed by using two separate health data standards.” The upcoming release of the LOINC Ontology reflects the strength and dedication of our partnership with SNOMED International,” says Marjorie Rallins, DPM, M.S., Executive Director of LOINC and Health Data Standards at Regenstrief. “By combining the robust capabilities of both standards, we’re delivering an integrated solution that simplifies implementation for healthcare providers and promotes seamless data exchange. This collaboration is a pivotal step toward improving interoperability and supporting better health outcomes globally.” Visit snomed.org and loinc.org for more information on each standard. - SNOMED International announces Entity Linking Challenge winners
SNOMED International announces Entity Linking Challenge winners Back 12 Apr 2024 Back SNOMED International is pleased to announce the winners of its recent Entity Linking Challenge. The challenge, which ran from the beginning of January 2024 to March 5, 2024, was hosted and organized by SNOMED International , and included partner organizations; DrivenData , which hosts online data science competitions; AI consultancy Veratai ; and Physionet , the Research Resource for Complex Physiologic Signals. The goal of the challenge was to train machine learning models to link clinical notes with specific topics based on the largest publicly available dataset of labeled clinical notes that had been de-identified and annotated with SNOMED CT concepts. Since much of the world's healthcare data is stored in free-text documents (usually clinical notes taken by doctors), unstructured data can be challenging for clinicians, researchers and other stakeholders to analyze and extract meaningful insights from. The results of the challenge demonstrate that by applying a standardized terminology like SNOMED CT, healthcare organizations can convert this free-text data into a structured format that can be readily analyzed by computers, in turn stimulating the development of new medicines, treatment pathways, and better patient outcomes. The challenge, which was open to teams and individuals in any field, offered a share of $25,000 in prize money to the top three winners. Participants could chart their progress against each other on a leaderboard, fostering a spirit of healthy competition. “SNOMED International thanks all the organizations that worked with us on this initiative and all of those who entered and completed the challenge,” said CEO Don Sweete. “The better we understand how SNOMED CT can be used to analyze and extract meaning from clinical notes, the greater impact it will have. This competition will result in the development of tools and techniques that can be shared within the SNOMED CT and broader health standards and research communities and used to unlock and supercharge the clinical data currently captured in free text. That is how we demonstrate the deep capabilities of SNOMED CT, whether to support the interoperability of patient records or to mine clinical data for a multitude of research purposes.” The entrants and winners A total of 553 individuals participated in the challenge, all of whom were part of teams. Of those, approximately 40 submitted the final data required. Some entrants compete in a variety of machine learning and artificial intelligence challenges beyond the healthcare industry, augmenting awareness of SNOMED CT in other sectors. Winners were selected based on a complex mathematical scoring mechanism which established a winning benchmark of which three winning teams surpassed. Congratulations to: First place winners ($12,500): Guy Amit , Yonatan Bilu , Irena Girshovitz and Chen Yanover ( KI Institute , Israel) Second place winners ($7,500): Gleb Sokolov , Mikhail Kulyabin and Aleksandr Galaida (Erlangen, Germany and Yerevan, Armenia) Third place winners ($5,000): Vincenzo Della Mea , Mihai Horia Popescu and Kevin Roitero ( Medical Informatics, Telemedicine & eHealth Lab , Italy) For more information on the winners, the benchmark solution and the competition metric, read a recent blog authored by DrivenData . SNOMED International Chief Digital Information Officer Rory Davidson said, “as this is the first time the organization has hosted a competition like this, it was difficult to predict the level of interest and participation from the community. We are extremely pleased to have received so many entrants, especially considering the niche nature of entity linking with SNOMED CT itself.” Rory elaborated to say, “one of the rewarding outcomes is that there have been individuals and teams taking part who would likely never have crossed paths with SNOMED CT and entity linking if we had not run the competition. By introducing SNOMED CT to new communities that we haven’t worked with before, we can share the message of how the terminology can be used alongside different AI technologies to improve the quality of healthcare data.” Veratai AI Consultant Will Hardman added that while there are many existing entity linking approaches and models, there are very few high-performance, well-trained sets of entity linking models in the public domain that serve a variety of use cases. Going into this challenge, he said he expected three potential outcomes: the first, the stimulation of research into building good open source entity linking models; the second, teaching people who build entity linking models how to extract knowledge from the target knowledge base and use that to help inform the selection of concepts; and the third, the creation of a good, publicly available, SNOMED CT-coded data set. Tom Joseph Pollard, Research Scientist at MIT and Technical Director of PhysioNet, said “the availability of annotated health data is crucial for advancing patient care and medical research. Pollard went on to say, “the manual annotation of data with standardized concepts remains a demanding and labor-intensive task. Through this partnership, PhysioNet and SNOMED International worked alongside the global research community to establish new benchmarks in entity linking. The challenge highlights the considerable potential of advances in artificial intelligence to transform the process of annotation, paving the way for medical research innovations that could ultimately improve patient outcomes.” Next steps SNOMED International will review the results of the challenge to better understand what can be learned from it. One of the known outcomes is that the artifacts produced from the process, such as annotation guidelines and lessons learned, will be shared with SNOMED International Members and the wider community. The winning solutions will also be published and open source so they will be freely available. “The Entity Linking Challenge won’t result in something concrete that you can plug into your system tomorrow, but the lessons learned are invaluable and help us better understand and inform the extensive capabilities of SNOMED CT,” Rory said. The completion of the competition marks the end of a years-long planning process – and potentially the beginning of additional endeavors to illustrate and harness the power of SNOMED CT in healthcare data analytics. SNOMED International is currently reviewing what future competitions may be, including being based on a different dataset, challenge or even a language. The challenges of hosting such competitions include finding a suitable dataset and potential partners, and identifying a repeatable, manageable and formulaic scoring mechanism.
