Description

Every health care provider has to record medical alert information about their patients. The National Board of Health and Welfare has described how the information should be documented in a structured way and developed a coding system for medical alert information such as allergies, contagious diseases and critical conditions using SNOMED CT and other coding systems.

Scope

Information about allergies, contagious disease and other critical condition in health care.

How SNOMED CT will be used

For coding of medical records and for reuse of information.

Why SNOMED CT will be used

SNOMED CT was selected for coding information for  multi-resistant bacteria, food hypersensitivity, chemical hypersensitivity, verification of hypersensitivity, hypersensitivity to insect bites and for hypersensitivity reactions or symptoms. SNOMED CT was selected since ICD-10 wasn't detailed enough.
