On April 5, 2009 Health Level Seven® Inc. and IHTSDO announced a collaboration agreement aimed at fostering interoperability and leading to improvements in patient safety by eliminating gaps and overlaps between the HL7 and IHTSDO standards. The terms of the IHTSDO/HL7 Collaboration Agreement complement both organizations' involvement in the Joint Initiative on SDO Global Health Informatics Standardization (JIC).
This Collaboration Agreement was further strengthened and updated in August 2014, with a focus on agreed areas of collaboration for both organisations, including:
- Licensing arrangements for use of SNOMED CT in HL7 International products
- Development of joint policy on SNOMED CT use in HL7 value sets and terminology binding in FHIR etc, including coordinated input to HL7 publication TermInfo
- Exploration of opportunities for collaboration on tooling
- Education, to relevant materials and contributions at each other’s meetings
For more information about the IHTSDO/HL7 Collaboration Agreement, please see the Information Sheets below
IHTSDO is pleased to make available below the ‘HL7 Version 3 Implementation Guide: TermInfo – Using SNOMED CT in CDA R2 Models, Release 1’ which is published by HL7 as a DSTU through to December 2017. This provides guidance for the use of SNOMED CT in these HL7 products, to ensure semantic interoperability for communicating clinical information. IHTSDO was pleased to be able to contribute to this work and encourages the community to provide feedback to HL7 on this draft standard.
