Since the Modeling Advisory Group meeting in June 2017, much progress has been made for the enhancements of logic expressivity for SNOMED CT. The first document on SNOMED CT Logic Profile Enhancements provided the background, benefits, requirements, targets and roadmap. The proposal went through the formal community of practice consultation process. As a result, two formal documents, SNOMED CT Logic Profile Specification
and SNOMED CT OWL Guide
(including OWL Reference Set Specification) have been developed and published in July 2018.
The content projects for drug, anatomy, and substance have utilised these DL features in the design of concept model. The development of SNOMED International authoring tool and classification service enables us to realise the benefits in the first release of a partial OWL axiom reference set in the July 2018 release. The Refset only included the property axioms to allow more time for our community to make changs in their tooling and systems.
We are pleased to inform our community of practice that a complete OWL axiom Refset has been developed and published in the demonstration release in September. The complete OWL axiom Refset represents all stated relationships including the new description logic features, such as general concept inclusion (GCI) axioms and additional axioms. The purpose is to provide an early view to help our community to evaluate their tooling, systems and release process. The complete OWL axiom Refset will be available on request for the January 2019 release and it will be mandatory and replace the stated relationship file in the July 2019 release.
The enhancements will help to achieve greater productivity, reach a higher quality at a lower cost and deliver a more complete and consistent terminology. In particular, it provides a mean for further expansion of expressive power in future. The potential impact and improvement will be the topics for discussions at the business meetings in October.
